‘Not David!’&nbsp;

SEPTEMBER 2022 | London Design FestivalXcessive Aesthetics aim to propose a new mode of reclaiming public space, reconsidering who or what is given space within the museum context and exploring the ‘replica’ across physical-digital space.
The Cast Courts are a starting point for Xcessive Aesthetics to investigate replicas, examining how replication bestows value and prestige on certain bodies by creating cultural icons that are copied, repeated and mass produced. These replicas take up space, both physically, within our built environment, and culturally, within the public consciousness. They propose to give space to alternative, less replicated figures, starting with their own bodies to explore the idea of ‘taking up space’ inside the V&amp;A. Using digital techniques such as 3D scanning, distortion and animation, they investigate the process of replication through both the digital and physical spheres.

Xcessive Aesthetics’ approach to replication is informed by digital culture, questioning the significance of the ‘copy’ when replicated in digital space. The transformations offered by digital tools can be employed to distort, scale and reframe the value given to particular bodies. In ‘Not David!’, they experiment with these tools, scanning their own bodies and exploring ways of ‘inflating’ them in digital softwares. Their manipulated bodies are then re-inserted into the physical world, fulfilling the idea of ‘taking up space’ within the museum. The fragmentation of the 3D mesh that takes place in the software is reflected in the fabrication of the physical form. Composed of laser-cut aluminium pieces, this form takes a moment of transition, a ‘screenshot’ recorded during the digital inflation of their bodies.

As museum audiences continue to evolve, XA proposes that digital space can be used as a testing ground for contesting and critiquing which objects and bodies are deemed worthy of display and replication and importantly, by whom. Digital techniques allow for experimentation with different kinds of replicas that can be ‘placed’ anywhere and ‘inflated’ to explore the idea of ‘taking up space’ across different contexts.

Studio Digital Native

September 2022 | Design Academy EindhovenXcessive Aesthetics will be running a new bachelor’s design studio, Studio Digital Native, for the 2022-2023 academic year at the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Studio Digital Native aims to rethink the infrastructures of technology, surveillance, and of media culture, in their relation to physical realities and public space. Hybridity forms a key part of the Digital Native’s creative approach: combining performative and archival design methods in unconventional ways to unpack and re-frame the interactions between digital and physical space. We will begin to explore each brief through Hybrid Phenomena, instances from popular culture and/or social and political events that highlight the interactions, collisions, frictions, glitches and feedback loops between the physical and digital. Through this hybrid approach we aim to hack into techno-political networks, to challenge the structures of colonial institutions, and to explore the material and spatial consequences of the digital world. Studio Digital Native is space of creative strategy-building towards decolonising technology and knowledge.

Reality Overloading: New Forms of Virtual Existence

JULY 2021 | Terraforma JournalDeveloped as a visual essay for the text titled “Squatting the Digital: Beyond Tech Bros” written and curated by 2050+&nbsp; for Terraforma Journal Issue #1, Reality Overloading is a collective virtual space developed through the use of game engine software, digital collage and photogrammetry. The image is composed of deconstructed digital elements of XA projects that explore the role of hacking in both physical and virtual spaces, from an Augmented Nail Salon to a Data Deli to Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. The space can be experienced in 3D as an immersive environment and collective story, that we expect to grow and evolve with our practice.

AR Apron

&nbsp;2021 | San Mei GalleryWe created an XA: Data Deli Augmented Reality Apron for San Mei Gallery’s ‘The Dinner Table’, the second edition of their annual winter fundraiser. We were invited to make an object for the dinner table, or about the communal experience of being at the dinner table.
The apron features an illustrated research drawing developed for our Data Deli project, which acts as a target for augmented reality when using a smart device and pointing it at the apron, activating 3D animated cookies that explode out from the apron.
It was great to see our Data Deli AR Apron on display at the San Mei gallery for the opening of The Dinner Table in December.

Data Deli: Do You Accept Cookies?

&nbsp;2020 | London Festival of Architecture
Every day we share and disclose our personal details to access the benefits of networked culture; we accept terms and conditions and privacy policies without reading them; we go to cafes and connect to public wifi networks for free internet; we accept cookies. The power of data and its influence over our lives and public space is ever increasing. Everything that happens online depends on the physical architecture of networks which has spatial implications on our urban environments.

The XA Data Deli is an interactive public pavilion which will provoke questions on the use of data collection in public space. The built form of the structure will be utilised as a vehicle to visualise the public's responses to a series of questions on public wifi and data collection. Ultimately, highlighting the ambiguous and shifting relationships which arise out of and accompany the usage of public wifi. In the same way that you accept cookies from websites, XA will serve cookies in exchange for your behavioural data, whilst hosting an informal group discussion about the pros and cons of free public wifi networks, data transparency and privacy protection.
As a continuation of the project, we submitted a textile for the “dinner table” fundraiser at San Mei Gallery, 2021.

&nbsp;2020 | Milton Keynes Art CentreXcessive Aesthetics will develop a series of workshops that will accumulate in a built installation which will explore themes of data visibility, data transparency and data biases. How is statistical data collected? What methodologies are used? And what biases can arise when this data is analysed and presented? The workshops, installation and events organised will explore these questions in a material form whilst formulating an alternate reality of Milton Keynes. An identity which is not solely influenced by statistical data, but one that is created by local communities and groups which we will work alongside during the course of the residency. We will collect memories and stories of Milton Keynes, through making and craft whilst developing new modes of data collection via building sensors in order to empower local communities to better understand their own environment. This new form of “data '' that will be produced will be raw and non-curated, free to access, with no analysis. The data will be interpreted in many different ways by the viewers, highlighting how one set of data can have a multitude of outcomes and meanings and yet are all still valid.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<img width="2000" height="1414" width_o="2000" height_o="1414" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/adc94acc53152cc62821a731a67a8b8c1753691e87809e1c4fc142254cb26743/210820_MK-Community-Meal.jpeg" data-mid="134227925" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/adc94acc53152cc62821a731a67a8b8c1753691e87809e1c4fc142254cb26743/210820_MK-Community-Meal.jpeg" />

XA x XAMA: Augmented Salon

JULY 2019 | LondonAugmented Salon was an installation and workshop by XA proposing an alternative communication space inspired by the typical beauty salon.&nbsp;XA hosted a live nail salon and augmented reality workshop engaging the public in discussions about the internet and social media. The installation and workshop was based on XA member Teresa Ribeiro Boulting’s project XAMA, which explored Brazilian beauty salons, a traditionally female hub of social interaction and information dissemination, as a parallel and autonomous alternative to the hegemony of existing social media platforms.
The workshop drew on the&nbsp; idea of the ‘Salon’ as a space for political discussions hosted by women, while using digital tools to add layers of information and spark public conversation. We invited members of the public to have their nails done while opening up discussions about the role of digital networks, and experimented with accessible digital tools to expand information dissemination and community-based interaction.

Augmented Salon took place within Michael Gozo’s Shop Work Shop, a research project supported by Theatrum Mundi (LSE Cities), in which he explored the shop as a space of economic and artistic experimentation.
